Diddy Kim Porter Statue: A Touching Memorial & Legacy

Okay, here's my attempt at sharing the process of creating a Diddy and Kim Porter statue, written in the style you requested:

Alright, so I decided to try and make a statue of Diddy and Kim Porter. Crazy, right? I know next to nothing about sculpting, but I figured, what the heck? Let's give it a shot.

First thing I did was gather a bunch of pictures. Like, a ton of photos of both of them. Different angles, different lighting, all that jazz. You gotta have reference, or you're just making stuff up.

Then, I grabbed some polymer clay. Heard it's good for beginners, easy to bake and all that. Got a big block of it. Looked intimidating, I won't lie.

Starting with Diddy: I decided to start with his head. Rolled a ball of clay, started pinching and prodding it to get the basic shape of his face. This part was HARD. His features are so distinct, and getting them right was crucial. I kept comparing my blob to the photos, over and over.

  • Messed up the nose like, five times. Kept making it too big, or too pointy.
  • The ears were a nightmare. I ended up using a toothpick to try and carve out the details.
  • Got the basic shape of his face done and ready.

After the head, I moved onto the body. Made a wire armature first, to give it some structure. Then I built up the clay around it, trying to get his posture right. He's got this confident, almost regal stance, and I wanted to capture that.

Moving onto Kim: I knew Kim's statue had to be perfect. Started with her face as well. Her features are softer than Diddy's, but just as important to get right. I found it even harder to capture her essence.

  • Her smile. That was the key. Spent ages just trying to get the curve of her lips right.
  • Her hair was tough too. Trying to sculpt realistic-looking hair out of clay is a real challenge. I ended up making individual strands and placing them carefully.

For her body, I tried to show her grace and elegance. Used the armature again, and took my time building up the clay. Her pose was slightly leaning towards Diddy, to show the connection between them.

Then came the really tricky part: getting them to look good together. I had to constantly adjust their positions, their heights, their angles, to make sure they complemented each other. I wanted to capture a sense of love and connection, not just two separate figures standing next to each other.

After what felt like a million tiny adjustments, I was finally happy(ish) with the overall forms. Time to bake them! Followed the instructions on the clay package, crossed my fingers, and hoped for the best.

The baking process: Let me tell you, I was sweating bullets while those statues were in the oven. Afraid they'd crack, or melt, or something else horrible.

Thankfully, they came out okay! A few minor cracks, but nothing major. Some super glue took care of those.

Next up, painting. I used acrylic paints, and spent hours layering colors and adding details. This is where the statues really started to come to life. I tried to match their skin tones as closely as possible, and pay attention to the subtle shadows and highlights.

After the paint dried, I added a coat of sealant to protect it. And that was it! They were finally done.

The End Result

Honestly, they're not perfect. Not by a long shot. But I'm still pretty proud of how they turned out. Especially considering I had no idea what I was doing when I started. It was a challenging, frustrating, but ultimately rewarding experience. I learned a lot, and I definitely have a newfound respect for sculptors! Would I do it again? Maybe. But next time, I'm taking a sculpting class first!
