Confederate Memorial Bricks Removed in Georgetown TX: Whats Next?

Well, let me tell ya ’bout this here brick thing down in Georgetown, Texas. I ain’t no fancy scholar or nothin’, but I heard folks talkin’ and I seen some things with my own two eyes.

Seems like they got these bricks, see? Memorial bricks, they call ’em. They put ’em down to ‘member folks, soldiers and such, I reckon. But now, they’re takin’ some of ’em up. Yup, diggin’ ’em right outta the ground!

Now, I ain’t sure why they’re doin’ it to all of ’em, but I heard tell some of them bricks was for Confederate soldiers. You know, them fellas from the Civil War? Fought for the South and all that. Folks is awful riled up about it, seems like.

Some say them Confederates don’t deserve no ‘membrance. Said they fought for the wrong side, fought to keep slaves and such. And I guess that ain’t right, no sirree. Slavery’s a bad thing, treatin’ folks like they ain’t even human.

But then there’s other folks sayin’ them soldiers was just fightin’ for their home, for what they believed in. Said they was brave and fought hard, and they deserve to be ‘membered just like any other soldier. It’s a real mess, I tell ya, folks arguin’ and fussin’ at each other.

  • They got this program, see? For puttin’ down the bricks. But they stopped it. Just like that. Said they need to figure things out, make sure they’re doin’ it right.
  • And then there’s that statue. A big ol’ statue of a Confederate soldier, right there in front of the courthouse. Been there for years and years. Folks is wantin’ to take that down too. More arguin’ and fussin’.

I ain’t got no dog in this fight, mind you. I just see folks gettin’ all worked up, and I don’t like it. Seems like we can’t agree on nothin’ no more. Can’t even agree on who to ‘member and who to forget.

This Georgetown place, it’s a nice little town, far as I can tell. Pretty houses, friendly folks, most of the time. But this brick thing and that statue, it’s stirrin’ up trouble. Folks is takin’ sides, gettin’ mad at each other. It’s a shame, it really is.

I don’t know what they’re gonna do, them city folks. Maybe they’ll take up all the bricks, maybe they’ll leave some. Maybe they’ll take down that statue, maybe they’ll leave it be. I just hope they figure it out soon, before things get too outta hand.

You know, it ain’t just about bricks and statues, though. It’s about history, and how we ‘member it. It’s about who we choose to honor, and why. And it’s about learnin’ from the past, so we don’t make the same mistakes again. That’s what I think, anyway.

And I reckon that’s all I gotta say ’bout this here brick business in Georgetown, TX. It’s a complicated thing, and I ain’t got all the answers. But I hope them city folks can come together and do what’s right, whatever that may be.

This here memorial brick program, it caused a whole heap of trouble. Pausing it was probably a good idea, give folks a chance to cool down and think things through. War is a terrible thing, no matter which side you’re on. And ‘membering it, well, that’s complicated too.

So there you have it, my two cents on the whole shebang. Take it for what it’s worth, which ain’t much, I reckon. But I hope it made some kind of sense, even if it ain’t all fancy and proper like them city folks talk.
