Well now, I reckon you’re lookin’ to hear ’bout them motorcycle accidents in Austin, huh? Lord knows there’s been a fair few over the years, and some of ‘em can sure break your heart. Austin, Texas, it’s one of them places folks like to ride their bikes, what with all the open roads and that nice warm weather. But, ya see, just ’cause a place is nice don’t mean accidents don’t happen. When they do, it’s usually bad news for someone, and sometimes it’s worse than bad, it’s downright tragic.
Now, just last year, there was a sad story ’bout a fella named Cedric Benson. He was a big ol’ football player once, you know, played for the Longhorns. But on a Saturday night, down there in West Austin, he was drivin’ his motorcycle way too fast. Reckon he was goin’ so fast, he didn’t see what was comin’. Him and his passenger didn’t make it out alive. It was a real shame, I tell ya. I heard he was just 36 years old. Too young to be gone, if you ask me. Folks say he was a good man, but that night, his life came to an end on that bike.
Now, I reckon a lotta folks love ridin’ their motorcycles in Austin. It’s a beautiful place to ride, with them long roads and the sunshine most of the time. But, just like with anything, if you’re not careful, things can go south mighty quick. You’ve got folks racin’ around, and sometimes they’re goin’ faster than they should. They don’t always see what’s ahead of ‘em, and that’s how accidents happen. Just like one I heard about from a few months ago, where a motorcycle hit a car and the rider didn’t make it. That crash happened up there in Northwest Austin. I reckon it was just before 10 o’clock at night. A terrible thing, and they say the rider didn’t stand a chance.
Motorcycle accidents in Austin don’t just happen at night though. No sir, they can happen any time of day, any day of the week. Take this one, for example. Back in May, just in the mornin’, a motorcycle crash took place up in Northwest Austin. That rider, they had to rush ‘em to the hospital with some real serious injuries. But don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t always the rider’s fault. Sometimes it’s the other drivers out there who don’t pay enough attention. They might not see the motorcycle until it’s too late, and then it’s a crash. And that’s all she wrote.
I reckon we gotta talk ’bout them statistics too. I seen some numbers, and it don’t paint a pretty picture. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that a big chunk of them deadly motorcycle crashes happen when there’s a head-on collision between a motorcycle and another vehicle. Now, you’d think it’d be easy enough for folks to see a motorcycle, but sometimes it ain’t. The bigger vehicles, they don’t always notice the smaller ones, and that’s how them deadly crashes happen.
And that’s what folks gotta be real careful ‘bout when they’re ridin’. There’s always the risk of hittin’ somethin’ or someone not seein’ you, but it’s still a risk worth takin’ for some. Austin, being a city with a whole lotta folks who love their motorcycles, still gotta deal with them wrecks, just like any other city. Don’t matter if it’s down on Burnet Road or Lime Creek Road or wherever else, accidents can happen, and when they do, it’s bad news.
We seen it with another crash back in July of 2023. A motorcycle collided with a car up in Northwest Austin. That was another one where the rider didn’t make it. It’s the kinda news that makes folks stop and think about how dangerous it can be out there on two wheels. Some folks don’t ever think ‘bout it, but when something like this happens, it sure makes you wonder if you should be ridin’ so fast, or at all.
Now, I ain’t tryin’ to scare ya away from ridin’ bikes or nothin’. If you love ridin’, you just gotta be careful. Watch out for them other drivers. Don’t be ridin’ like you’re in a race, ‘cause that’s when things go wrong. And for heaven’s sake, make sure you wear that helmet! It don’t matter how good a rider you are, a helmet might be the difference between life and death. I can’t tell you how many times I seen folks get hurt bad just ‘cause they weren’t wearin’ that helmet, or they were ridin’ like they were invincible. Nobody’s invincible, not on a motorcycle.
So, the next time you’re thinkin’ about gettin’ on that bike, just slow down a bit. Take a deep breath and think about what you’re doin’. ‘Cause it don’t take much for things to go wrong, and when they do, it’s too late to fix it.
- Remember to always wear your helmet.
- Ride at a safe speed and avoid reckless behavior.
- Pay attention to the traffic around you.
- Be extra cautious when riding at night or in low visibility conditions.
And that’s all I got to say about them motorcycle accidents in Austin. I hope you ride safe, and if you know anyone who loves their bike, maybe share some of this with ‘em. Sometimes folks need to hear it before they realize just how dangerous it can be out there. Safe ridin’ to ya, and take care!
